Since this was a busy week and I did not go out much, this post will be about what daily life is like! I have class Monday through Friday, and I start at either 9 am or 11 am. I live in the residence hall here. I like it a lot and love that it has air conditioning. All of the academic buildings are close; my longest walk to class is about 5 minutes. I normally eat a croissant and coffee with milk for breakfast, and then I eat lunch around 1 with all the other students who live in the residence hall. We try to follow the Spanish tradition of taking a siesta after lunch, but I normally watch Netflix instead of sleep. After that we normally do homework or hangout, eat dinner around 7, then homework or hangout again. I’ve definitely gotten into a routine here!

Como esta semana estaba muy ocupada y no salía mucho, por eso esta entrada será sobre mi vida cotidiana aquí. Tengo clase el lunes a viernes a las 9 o 11 de la mañana. Vivo en la residencia estudiantil aquí. Me gusta la residencia mucho y me encanta que la tenga aire acondicionado. Todos los edificios académicos son cercanos; mi camino más a la clase es como 5 minutos. Normalmente yo como un croissant y café con leche para el desayuno, y como el almuerzo a la una con los otros estudiantes que viven en la residencia. Nosotros tratamos seguir la tradición española de tomando una siesta después del almuerzo, pero yo miro Netflix en lugar de dormir típicamente. Después de la siesta, hacemos la tarea o pasamos un rato juntos, comemos la cena a las 7, y después hacemos la tarea o pasamos un rato junto otra vez. ¡Definitivamente estoy en una rutina aquí!

The past few days have mostly consisted of schoolwork. I had a test today in my Spanish culture/history class, and have homework due throughout the rest of the week that I started. We have extra classes this week because we had 2 days off last week during the holiday Corpus Christi. Yesterday we went to a Spanish cooking class at the university. We made tortilla española and fried doughnuts with sugar. I kept the recipes so I can make them at home one day for my family to try. One thing that’s pretty different here is the food. We eat a lot of bread, meat, and paella. Paella is really good, but the meat is strange. We all miss the food at home but are having a good time here!

Los días pasados han incluido mucha tarea. Hoy tomé un examen en mi clase de la historia y cultura española. Tengo que hacer tarea para los próximos días de la semana, pero la empecé. Tenemos más clases esta semana porque tenemos dos días sin clase la semana pasada para la fiesta de Corpus Christi. Ayer fuimos a una clase de cocina española en la universidad. Nosotros hicimos tortilla española y donuts fritos con azúcar. Yo tengo las recetas entonces puedo hacerlo en casa un día para mi familia. Una cosa muy diferente aquí es la comida. Comemos mucho pan, carne, y paella. Paella es deliciosa, pero el carne es raro. ¡Extrañamos la comida de los EEUU pero estamos pasando un buen tiempo aquí!

This past weekend was fun and relaxing. On Saturday, everyone in the program went on an excursion to Segovia. Two tour guides went with as well. We saw Roman aqueducts, the Alcázar of Segovia, and a cathedral there. The aqueducts are huge and very impressive, and the cathedral is gorgeous. My favorite part of the trip was seeing the Alcázar. One interesting fact about it is that Walt Disney used this castle as inspiration for the famous Disney castle. After we toured the inside, we climbed a tight, spiral staircase to the top, where we saw amazing views. It was definitely the highlight of my weekend. Today, we spent the morning resting, and later went to an outdoor pool in Toledo. It was refreshing as it’s getting very hot here. Next week will be over 100 degrees almost every day, so wish me luck!

Este finde fue divertido y relajado. En sábado, toda la gente en el programa fue en una excursión a Segovia. Dos guías turísticas fueron a Segovia también. Vemos aqueductos romanos, el Alcázar de Segovia, y una catedral. Los aqueductos son muy grandes e impresionantes, y la catedral es muy bonita. Mi parte favorita del viaje fue cuando fuimos al Alcázar. Un hecho interesante sobre esta castilla es que Walt Disney usó esta castilla como inspiración para la castilla famosa de Disney. Después de vemos el interior, nosotros subimos una escalera pequeña y espiral a la parte más alta donde vemos una vista increíble. Fue la parte más memorable de mi finde. Hoy, descansamos en la mañana y fuimos a una piscina del aire libre en Toledo. Fue refrescante porque hace mucho calor aquí. ¡La próxima semana hará más de 100 grados casi cada día, entonces me desea buena suerte!

Since the day before I left for Spain, I have been feeling sick and was not getting any better. I finally decided it was time to go see the doctor yesterday. Professor Vilaseca went with me and helped translate a lot, because while I can speak a lot of Spanish, I don’t know any medical vocabulary. Although I would prefer to not be sick, it was really interesting to see how the hospital in Toledo works since I am a nursing major. I met with a nurse and doctor, then went to radiography to get a scan of my face and mouth to check my sinuses. I got to see the scan after which was cool for me. I got antibiotics today and am hoping I will feel a lot better soon so I can better enjoy my time here.

Hasta que el día que yo salí para España, me sentía enferma, y no estaba mejorando. Ayer, yo decidí que necesité ir al hospital en Toledo. Profesor Vilaseca fue conmigo y ayudaba a traducir mucho, porque mientras que puedo hablar mucho español, no sé ningunas palabras médicas en el español. Mientras prefiero no estar enferma, fue muy interesante a ver cómo funciona el hospital en Toledo, porque mi especialidad es enfermería. Yo hablaba con una enferma y doctora, y después fui a radiografía para obtener un escáner de mi cara y boca para observar mis senos. Yo vi el escáner y fue muy chulo en mi opinión. Yo compré los antibióticos hoy y espero que me sienta mucho mejor pronto, entonces puedo

disfrutar mejor mi tiempo aquí.

I’ve officially been in Spain for 1 week! It has been tiring but great. The other students and I had a busy end of the week. On Thursday, we went on a tour of the cathedral here in Toledo. The cathedral is beautiful; I couldn’t believe the amount of detail it has. On Saturday, most of us took a bus to Madrid in the morning and spent the entire day walking around the city. We saw the palace and a beautiful park and garden, rented rowboats, and more! It was a long day, but we saw so much, so it was worth it. By the time I got back to my dorm, I had walked over 12 miles and had about 26,000 steps for the day. I hope I can return to Madrid one day.

¡Yo he estado en España por una semana! Estoy cansada pero fue una gran semana. Otros estudiantes y yo tuvimos una fin de semana ocupada. En jueves, fueron en un tour de la catedral en Toledo. La catedral es muy bonita. Los detalles de la catedral son increíbles. En sábado, unos estudiantes y yo tomamos un autobús a Madrid y caminamos en la ciudad por todo el día. Vimos el palacio y un parque y jardín bonito, alquilamos botes de remo, y más. Fue un día muy largo pero valió la pena. Cuando llegué a mi residencia, yo caminé más de 12 millas y tuve 26.000 pasos para el día. Espero que pueda regresar a Madrid en el futuro.

Yesterday was my second day in Spain! I flew in early in the morning on Sunday and arrived in Toledo in the late afternoon. After arriving, we ate dinner at a tapas restaurant and then wandered Toledo, stopping to look in shops or take pictures. Monday, we had a program orientation, took a tour of campus, went on a train tour of Toledo, and ate a large lunch at a pretty restaurant named La Flor.  Toledo is a beautiful, historic city with lots of narrow, winding streets. Our dorm is in La Plaza de Padilla and very close to all of the University of Castilla-La Mancha buildings. This college campus is very different from NIU and many other colleges in the U.S. The classes are held in buildings that are hundreds of years old. Some have small ruins in them or were once a religious place. I’m looking forward to getting to know Toledo! 

¡Ayer fue mi segundo día en Toledo! Yo llegué en España temprano en la mañana en domingo y en Toledo en la tarde. Después de nosotros encontramos los dormitorios, cenamos en un restaurante de tapas y caminamos en Toledo. Yo vi muchas tiendas y tomé muchos fotos. En lunes, tenemos una orientación sobre el programa y tomamos un tour de caminar de la universidad y un tour de trén de Toledo. Comí mucho para el almuerzo en un restaurante bonito que se llama La Flor. Toledo es una ciudad bonita y historíca con calles angosta y serpenteante. Nuestro dormitorio está en La Plaza de Padilla y es muy cerca de otros edificios de la Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha. Este campus es muy diferente de NIU y muchos otras universidades en los Estados Unidos. Las clases están en edificios muy viejos. Algunos tienen ruinas pequeñas o eran lugares religiosos. ¡Estoy emocionada a conocer Toledo más!
